Restaurant Pizza Fraction Challenge (5th)
Practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators by "ordering" pizza for a group.

Materials:
4–5 Paper plates (or paper circles)
Markers and Scissors
Ruler
"Order Ticket" (scratch paper)
1. Prep the Kitchen (5 minutes)
Prepare your pizzas by dividing them into equal fractional slices. Use your ruler to keep them even!
Pizza A: Cut into halves
Pizza B: Cut into fourths
Pizza C: Cut into eighths
2. The Order Ticket (The Math)
A "Dinner Rush" has just come in. You must solve the math on your paper before you can touch the "food."
The Customers:
Customer 1: Wants 1/2 of a cheese pizza.
Customer 2: Wants 3/8 of a pepperoni pizza.
Customer 3: Wants 1/4 of a veggie pizza.
The Math Task:
Find a Common Denominator: Convert all fractions so they have a denominator of 8.
Calculate the Total: Add the three orders together.
Find the Leftovers: If you started with 2 whole pizzas, how much is left over for the chef? (Subtract your total from 2).
3. Build & Test (10–15 minutes)
Now, physically plate the order using your paper slices.
Place the correct physical slices for all three customers on a "serving tray" (tabletop).
The Proof: Compare your pile of paper slices to your math. Does the physical pile equal your calculated total?
The Standing Test: All slices must fit on the tray without overlapping to be a "valid" order.
Keep doing this with different orders and fractions for practice!
