The Grocery Run Decimal Dash

Master adding and subtracting decimals (to the hundredths place) and estimation by staying under a strict budget.

Materials:
A grocery store circular (the weekly ad) OR an online grocery website
Scratch paper (for your "Cart")
Fake money or a calculator (to verify at the end)
The Budget: Exactly $25.00
1. The Strategy Phase (5 minutes)
Look through the "store" (the ad or website). Your mission is to buy exactly 5 items that you would need to make a meal, but there is a catch:
You must get as close to $25.00 as possible without going over.
Plan Before You Write: Estimate the prices in your head. If something is $4.89, think of it as $5.00.
2. Filling the Cart (10 minutes)
Write down your 5 chosen items and their exact prices (e.g., $6.42, $3.15, etc.).
The Rule: You must line up the decimal points perfectly when you write your addition problem.
The Math: Add the 5 prices together to find your Subtotal.
3. The "Surprise Tax" Test (5 minutes)
Every shopper has to pay "handling fees."
Add a flat $1.75 "delivery fee" to your subtotal.
The Result: What is your final total?
The Calculation: Subtract your final total from your $25.00 budget to see exactly how much "change" you have left.
4. Success Criteria
The "Gold Medal": Your total is between $24.00 and $25.00.
The "Silver Medal": Your total is between $20.00 and $23.99.
The "Busted!": Your total is over $25.00 (you have to "put one item back" and recalculate!).
